Workshop Today: Using MLA Style and Avoiding Plagiarism

Using MLA Style and Avoiding Plagiarism
MLA is one of the two most commonly required citation styles on the CSUSM campus. This session will provide samples of in-text citations and works cited pages, and will show a variety of resources available to help with citing sources. We will also briefly cover plagiarism – what it is and how to avoid it!

Workshop Today: Writing Personal Statements and Scholarship Essays
Today begins our Spring 2011 Workshop Series! Here's a brief description of today's workshop:
Join us for an informative workshop on how to prepare a personal statement. What should be included in the statement? How should it be organized? What should you keep in mind when tailoring your statement for a specific audience? There’s still time before many graduate school and scholarship application deadlines!

In today's U-Hour workshop, we discussed the tricky but important genre of the personal essay, specifically the personal statement (for graduate school) and scholarship applications. We began our discussion by going over the particulars of the genre of the personal essay. We talked about key guiding questions to help you write during the planning and pre-writing phases, and gave tips and tricks for how to focus your essay during drafting. We also stressed the importance of revision and making sure a second (or third or fourth) pair of eyes gets a chance to read your essay before you have to submit it to the selection committee.
